Honda Approves Production of the Chic S660

It has been a while since Honda last produced a genuinely sporty car. The direction of the company has fostered efficiency and technology, and its lineup has reflected that in quality models like the Civic, Accord, and Odyssey. Though sales are strong among these classes, it seems Honda may pursue those spirited drivers who prefer speed over fuel-economy. Back at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, the automaker unveiled a concept called the S660 – which has now officially received the green light for 2015 production.

When it was unveiled in Tokyo, the S660 concept housed a 660-cc turbocharged three-cylinder that generated 64 horsepower mated to a continuously variable transmission – and delivered to a rear-wheel drive system. Though you may want to avoid challenging sports cars that have a house’s price tag, you will definitely manage to have fun behind the wheel of this sub-1,900 –pound curb weight car. Keep in mind that these specs were for a concept. Honda may very well change the powertrain for the production version.

The Honda S660 is reminiscent of a 1990s cult classic known as the Beat, a diminutive convertible with unique styling and a responsive, fun driving experience. Though it is no longer in production, the Beat brought panache and verve to a brand typically purchased for its reliability and function. Now it’s the S660’s turn to do the same.

At this point, the Honda S660 is only slated to go on sale in Japan. We can say, however, that with the return of the Acura division’s legendary NSX, Honda might look to place this sporty model on the global market. We will be sure to keep you updated on any developments for the S660.

In the meantime, we at Leith Honda Aberdeen have a great inventory of vehicles that range the gamut from compact car to SUV. And come find out why Honda is Kelley Blue Book’s Best Overall Brand Award winner.
